I gave the eTouch ETM-G01E a 5 star rating for the following reasons: it is a noninvasive glucose meter, eTouchUS has said that there will be no annual charges to continue using the glucose meter and the uncalibrated glucose measurements seem reasonable. I must say that the ETM-G01E documentation is confusing, but usable. Also, the delivered manual is different than the online manual.
I am using the meter in the uncalibrated mode because my last lab glucose measurement is old and since then I am on a daily exercise program and I have started diabetes medication. So hopefully my current blood glucose is lower. Later this year, I will calibrate the meter at the time I have my next lab blood test.
I used the Coefficient of Variation (CV) metric to determine performance as this can easily be compared to finger test strip glucose meters. Measurements were made daily for 10 days and averaged. A FBG (fasting) measurement was made first thing in the morning. Mid-morning a 40-50 g carb meal was consumed followed by 3 PBG (postprandial) measurements at +15 minutes, +1 hour, and +2 hours.
Results:
The FBG average value was 117 mg/dl with a CV of 8.4%.
The +!5 minute PBG average was 132.9 mg/dl with a CV of 10.3%.
The +1 hour PBG average was 138.2 mg/dl with a CV of 8.1%.
The +2 hour PBG average was 143.4 mg/dl with a CV of 7.7%.
Comparison:
The ETM-G01E CVs measured from 7.7% to 10.3%. This compares well to the home-use finger test strip glucose meter with reported CVs of 10% to 15%. It’s worth noting that high-end lab glucose meters have CVs of 1% to 2% with some as high as 4%. Lab testing of various finger test strip glucose meters in a controlled environment using artificial blood have CVs in the 3% to 5% range.
I did check the variability of consecutive measurements. The worse consecutive measurement I found for the ETM-G01E had a difference of 30 mg/dl. Users of finger test strip glucose meters have documented seeing 20 to 50 mg/dl differences in consecutive measurements.
Later this year, after I calibrate my ETM-G01E, I will update this post if I see anything that will change this evaluation.
